The Dominica Island
Dominica is an island well known for its natural beauty and rainforests. It has three designated parks where tourists can take in the native species of plants and animals of the tropics. The Northern Forest Reserve, Central Forest Reserve and Morne Trois Pitons National Park are designated lands for viewing a rainforest in all its splendor.
There are two rare species of birds that are native only to Dominica that can be found in their rainforests. The Red Necked Amazon and the Imperial Amazon are specific to Dominica and can be found in the trees of the rainforest. The island is also home to a large variety of vibrant and colorful butterflies that add outstanding beauty to their habitat. There are actually more than fifty species of butterflies on the island. Two of these butterflies, the Snout and the Hairstreak can not be found anywhere else in the world
Dominica itself is considered a biodiversity hotspot. This means there is a high number of species found in this region. This means there are a large variety of frogs, birds, mammals and reptiles in a small stretch. Morne Trois Pitons National Park alone spans roughly 70 square kilometers in size and is only half the size of the Northern Forest Reserve.
The Morne Trois Pitons National Park has a very large lake known as Boiling Lake that is very unique. It is a flooded volcanic crater with an mysterious blue-gray color. It consistently has a veil of steam around it as the water of the lake tends to average between 180 – 200 degrees Fahrenheit!
The island of itself with volcanic history creates lush vegetation that is rarely found anywhere in the world. This also makes a wonderful home for a large number of insects that are also rare and only found in tropical areas. The natural jewels of the Carribean, these natural untouched areas are amazing places to view the treasures of jungles in Dominica.
